Barriers of Active Listening
Environmental (Physical) barrier (Noise or visual distractions): Background noise, use of phone, Poor hearing, long distance, physical discomfort, low voice volume, or technical issues in virtual conversations can make it hard to focus.
How to overcome Environmental (Physical) barrier:
- Create a conducive (अनुकूल) environment to avoid misinterpretations and distractions.
- Find a quiet place or reduce background noise as much as possible.
- Sit or stand where you can clearly hear and see the speaker.
- Ensure good audio/video quality in virtual conversations.
- Use hearing aids, captions, or sign language when needed.
- Stay Comfortable.
Linguistic (Language) Barrier: Use of complicated words, different accents, slang & idioms or speaking too fast or too softly can make it hard to fully understand and engage in a conversation.
How to overcome this barrier:
- Politely request the speaker to repeat or explain it again.
- Take extra time to process unfamiliar words patiently.
- Gestures, facial expressions, and tone help convey meaning.
Personal factors: It includes Emotional Reactions (like feeling stressed, angry, defensive, or impatient) can block understanding, Prejudgment (Prejudice) means assuming you already know what the speaker will say can prevent real listening, Lack of interest, Fatigue, Health issues etc.
How to overcome this barrier:
- Allow other person to finish speaking, and then, respond.
- Avoid developing preconceptions approach when interacting with others.
- Be aware of your emotions and thoughts while listening.
- Rest, eat well, and take breaks to improve focus.
- Keep an open mind and listen without judgment.
- Ask questions and summarize to stay involved in the conversation.
